The body scan is a central and integral part of some well known evidence - based interventions: MBSR, MBCT and MiCBT – having it’s roots in the first foundation of mindfulness as taught in Vipassana or Insight meditation. This workshop will be a day for beginning and experienced meditators as well clinicians using mindfulness in their work, to learn and practice the 32 Parts of the Body Meditation that can be considered the original body scan. We will explore how this practice intersects with contemplating the four elements and death as a way of deepening our understanding of impermanence and ultimately, the impersonal nature of the body and mind.
The first foundation of mindfulness – exploring bodily experience - contains six distinct body practices. The first three are commonly practiced: bringing mindfulness to breathing, bodily postures, and into everyday life activities. The other three are the 32 parts of the body, the four elements, and the nine charnel ground contemplations on death. Although clearly important, these last three meditations are almost never taught in the west and most meditators, even those who are quite dedicated and experienced, have no exposure to them. Many practitioners are not even aware they exist.
This day will be a time for you to delve more deeply into your body. As you feel into and listen to your body you will develop a more vivid body awareness leading to insights, to enable you to better care for yourself and others physically, mentally, and emotionally.
As you work with the 32 Parts of the Body Meditation, you may begin to discover the body’s true nature as it begins to break down into the primary elements of solidity, liquidity, motion, and temperature revealing the impermanent, unreliable/dissatisfying and ultimately impersonal nature of the body/mind.
