Cultivating Kindness

with Eva Papadopoulo

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

--Naomi Shihab Nye, Words Under the Words, Eighth Mountain Press, 1995

It is impossible to go through life and live it fully without experiencing sorrow and disappointment. Kindness can be the way to befriend ourselves, to heal wounds of heart and head and maintain equanimity. Yet, it is often easier to give to another than to ourselves.
In this program, we will investigate what it means for us to cultivate kindness – to nourish the seed of kindness within ourselves and to learn how to be kind as we open to the experience of our lives - thoughts, feelings and sensations. Our focus will be bringing learning how to bring kindness to our experience, to self and others, and to see what transformation this way of living can have on our bodies and minds as well as our relationships. We will practice meditations focusing on the elements of compassion and generosity.

This course will use the same format as the MBSR class - of practice, exercises, discussion, poems, and the opportunity to explore your own process and grow towards integrating kindness and friendliness into your daily life.
