Cultivating compassion

This is a course for graduates of the MBSR program to deepen their practice with a specific focus on cultivating kindness and compassion for self and others.

It can feel like ‘second nature’ to respond with contraction and a subtle aggression to the pain in our lives. In this course we will explore the hypothesis that compassion is a possible, wise and effective response to the suffering that arises in life. In this experiential course, we will focus on the inner development of self-kindness, a sense of connectedness and contentment and how this influences the wider world, drawing on Buddhist perspectives and on the evidence-based work of Paul Gilbert - http://compassionatemind.co.uk/

We will explore:
- practices and exercises to develop compassion
- human evolution: the “old” brain and the “new” brain
- human development: the affect systems which drive and transform our experience
- empowerment through self-soothing and compassion
- connectedness and compassion in the world
- finding spaciousness and choice in responding to difficulty
