Two day Brisbane workshop

Mindfulness is everywhere!

But what is it and how does it help?

This workshop has been cancelled due to personal circumstances.

Our sincere apologies for any disappointments. We are aiming to reschedule the workshop for the first half of next year. Please click here to register your interest and we will be in touch to let you know the new dates in early 2012.

We will be running our usual 8-week MBSR course in Brisbane in term 4, starting on Thursday October 20. Please follow this link for more information

There has been an exponential growth in the use of “mindfulness” in the helping professions.   And yet, the word is used to describe a huge range activities and interventions, delivered by people with vastly different training, experience and conceptual understanding of what it is they are offering, and over different time frames with different intensity of engagement with mindfulness processes.

This workshop will give you an intensive experience of mindfulness in an engaging and personal way – physically, intellectually and emotionally.  It will also provide a conceptual overview of the origins of the practices and the theory on which they rest.    Pre and post reading will be provided, as well as 4 practice CDs.

The practice of mindfulness allows you to pay close attention to the present moment, noting your thoughts, feelings and body sensations with an attitude of curiosity and non-judgment. This observing, non-reactive perspective enables one to consciously respond with clarity and focus, rather than react out of a habitual pattern.

Mindfulness is an innate resource able to be cultivated in the service of learning, growing and healing. This workshop is intended to fire up this inner capacity and infuse your life with awareness so that more presence, peace and choice is possible – whatever your circumstances.

Learning outcomes:

-       direct experience and knowledge of various mindfulness practices in order to begin a personal practice

-       increased capacity to recognise stress early and to interrupt spirals of stress reactivity through mindfulness practice

-       understanding of stress physiology and it’s impact on the body and mind

-       understanding the four foundations of mindfulness as a basis for practice

-       knowledge of the Buddhist origins of mindfulness as practices within Western psychology

-       space and time to take stock of one’s life and reconnection to one’s values in your work and life.

The theoretical and practical underpinnings of this exploration is the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program generated by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in the US.

We will use theory, practice, discussions, exploratory exercises and pre-reading to explore the theory and practice of mindfulness over these two days.

Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally. - Jon Kabat-Zinn
