How often do we feel this during times of challenge, conflict and turmoil in our relationships – with partners, kids, family, friends and co-workers? What can mindfulness practice offer in terms of increasing awareness of unhelpful patterns in ourselves, and also in terms of finding skilful actions in our relating with others?

Mindfulness training increases our self-awareness, helping us make a distinction between our direct, "in the moment" experience and our judgments and interpretations of these emotional and bodily states. This clarity enables us to more easily break the cycles of automatic reactivity and undo the grip of negative stories and rigid beliefs about ourselves and others, based on past negative experiences. We have the potential to disengage from the inner critic and become more self-compassionate, and to see others with more curiosity and compassion too.  We get more comfortable with hearing and seeing with fresh ears and eyes.

Making changes in our relationships often involves being less defensive, more honest and assertive.  Mindfulness training can help us explore and practice these uncomfortable new behaviours with a little more grace and ease.

What will you be learning in the course?

How can the MBSR course help me in my relationships?

Over the eight weeks in the MBSR course - through practice, experiential exercises, reflection, discussion, poetry, stories and theory, and sharing in the group - we will be:

  • Developing awareness and insights into our own style of relating
  • Developing healthy emotional regulation strategies
  • Using the body and mind as resources in moments of tension
  • Developing a greater understanding of the origin of one's own suffering in relationships
  • Exploring the kinds of meanings and thinking we bring to everyday exchanges that are perhaps not so helpful
  • Bringing mindfulness principles more consciously into your relationships 
  • Cultivating steady empathy, compassion and positive regard for ourselves and others, especially during difficult times

Since doing your course (Living with Wisdom and Compassion) my major transformation has been in my daily work as a family doctor. Instead of being the best doctor I can so that patients will admire me and appreciate me I am aware that I am regularly “putting myself in my patients shoes.” I want their lives to be better and their suffering to diminish. It was great to be able to explore the strength of compassion, both internally and externally, through Living with Wisdom and Compassion. This course builds on what MBSR began. While it had its challenging moments, I came away from it feeling stress-relief thanks to my heart softening yet strengthening. And from the ability to see that even though we are all unique individuals, and we may express ourselves in wildly different ways, we all have the same needs. The better I can get at understanding those needs the more effective I can be in helping myself and others. I highly recommend this course to everyone.
